Celtic Connections

Putting a grand-scale Celtic Connections spin on the traditional concert-and-dance format, accordionist Alasdair MacCuish and Shetland fiddler Chris Stout bring together a lavish line-up of contemporary folk and Scottish dance-band luminaries including Solas multi-instrumentalist Seamus Egan,†Highland fiddler Duncan Chisholm,†pipes and whistle ace Fraser Fifield, harpist Catriona McKay, guitarist Tony Byrne, concertina wizard Simon Thoumire, top accordionists Duncan Black and Tom Orr, fiddler Marie Fielding and pianist Gordon Middler. Together with Stout and MacCuish themselves, all are equally at home playing for listeners or dancers, and tonight combines the best of both worlds, with the first half comprising specially-arranged concert sets for both the full ensemble and smaller groupings. With the tables then cleared, MacCuish and his Black Rose Ceilidh Band colleagues – whose excellent new album No Half Measures features several of tonight’s guests – will form the backbone of a ceilidh-dance supergroup, likewise bridging two vibrant realms of today’s Scottish folk scene, which all too rarely meet.
